The First Book of Maccabees, Chapter 11ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Α′ ΙΑ′

καὶ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου ἤθροισεν δυνάμεις πολλὰς ὡς ἡ ἄμμος ἡ παρὰ τὸ χεῖλος τῆς θαλάσσης καὶ πλοῖα πολλὰ καὶ ἐζήτησε κατακρατῆσαι τῆς βασιλείας Ἀλεξάνδρου δόλῳ καὶ προσθεῖναι αὐτὴν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ

And the king of Egypt gathered forces as numerous as the sand by the seashore, and many ships, and he sought by deceit to gain control of Alexander's kingdom and add it to his own kingdom.

καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς Συρίαν λόγοις εἰρηνικοῖς καὶ ἤνοιγον αὐτῷ οἱ ἀπὸ τῶν πόλεων καὶ συνήντων αὐτῷ ὅτι ἐντολὴ ἦν Ἀλεξάνδρου τοῦ βασιλέως συναντᾶν αὐτῷ διὰ τὸ πενθερὸν αὐτοῦ εἶναι

And he went out into Syria with peaceful words, and the men from the cities kept opening to him and going out to meet him, because there was an order from King Alexander to meet him, since he was his father-in-law.

ὡς δὲ εἰσεπορεύετο εἰς τὰς πόλεις Πτολεμαῖος ἀπέτασσε τὰς δυνάμεις φρουρὰν ἐν ἑκάστῃ πόλει

Now as Ptolemy was entering the cities, he kept stationing forces as a garrison in each city.

ὡς δὲ ἤγγισαν Αζώτου ἔδειξαν αὐτῷ τὸ ἱερὸν Δαγων ἐμπεπυρισμένον καὶ Ἄζωτον καὶ τὰ περιπόλια αὐτῆς καθῃρημένα καὶ τὰ σώματα ἐρριμμένα καὶ τοὺς ἐμπεπυρισμένους οὓς ἐνεπύρισεν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ ἐποίησαν γὰρ θιμωνιὰς αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ αὐτοῦ

Now when they came near Ashdod, they showed him the sanctuary of Dagon burned down, and Ashdod and its surrounding settlements demolished, and the bodies thrown about, and those burned in the war, for they had made heaps of them along his road.

καὶ διηγήσαντο τῷ βασιλεῖ ἃ ἐποίησεν Ιωναθαν εἰς τὸ ψογίσαι αὐτόν καὶ ἐσίγησεν ὁ βασιλεύς

And they recounted to the king what Jonathan had done, in order to blame him; but the king kept silent.

καὶ συνήντησεν Ιωναθαν τῷ βασιλεῖ εἰς Ιοππην μετὰ δόξης καὶ ἠσπάσαντο ἀλλήλους καὶ ἐκοιμήθησαν ἐκεῖ

And Jonathan met the king at Joppa with honor, and they greeted one another and lodged there.

καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ιωναθαν μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως ἕως τοῦ ποταμοῦ τοῦ καλουμένου Ἐλευθέρου καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν εἰς Ιερουσαλημ

And Jonathan went with the king as far as the river called Eleutherus, and he returned to Jerusalem.

ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς Πτολεμαῖος ἐκυρίευσεν τῶν πόλεων τῆς παραλίας ἕως Σελευκείας τῆς παραθαλασσίας καὶ διελογίζετο περὶ Ἀλεξάνδρου λογισμοὺς πονηρούς

But King Ptolemy gained control of the coastal cities as far as Seleuceia by the sea, and he kept devising evil plans against Alexander.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρέσβεις πρὸς Δημήτριον τὸν βασιλέα λέγων δεῦρο συνθώμεθα πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς διαθήκην καὶ δώσω σοι τὴν θυγατέρα μου ἣν εἶχεν Ἀλέξανδρος καὶ βασιλεύσεις τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ πατρός σου

And he sent envoys to King Demetrius, saying, 'Come, let us make a covenant with one another, and I will give you my daughter, whom Alexander had, and you shall reign over your father's kingdom.'

μεταμεμέλημαι γὰρ δοὺς αὐτῷ τὴν θυγατέρα μου ἐζήτησεν γὰρ ἀποκτεῖναί με

For I regret having given him my daughter, for he sought to kill me.

καὶ ἐψόγισεν αὐτὸν χάριν τοῦ ἐπιθυμῆσαι αὐτὸν τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ

And he reproached him because he had coveted his kingdom.

καὶ ἀφελόμενος αὐτοῦ τὴν θυγατέρα ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῷ Δημητρίῳ καὶ ἠλλοιώθη τῷ Ἀλεξάνδρῳ καὶ ἐφάνη ἡ ἔχθρα αὐτῶν

And after taking his daughter away from him, he gave her to Demetrius and turned against Alexander, and their hostility became manifest.

καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Πτολεμαῖος εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν καὶ περιέθετο τὸ διάδημα τῆς Ἀσίας καὶ περιέθετο δύο διαδήματα περὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ τὸ τῆς Αἰγύπτου καὶ Ἀσίας

And Ptolemy entered Antioch and put on the diadem of Asia, and he placed two diadems upon his head, that of Egypt and of Asia.

Ἀλέξανδρος δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἦν ἐν Κιλικίᾳ κατὰ τοὺς καιροὺς ἐκείνους ὅτι ἀπεστάτουν οἱ ἀπὸ τῶν τόπων ἐκείνων

Now King Alexander was in Cilicia in those days, because the people from those regions were in revolt.

καὶ ἤκουσεν Ἀλέξανδρος καὶ ἦλθεν ἐπ' αὐτὸν ἐν πολέμῳ καὶ ἐξήγαγεν Πτολεμαῖος καὶ ἀπήντησεν αὐτῷ ἐν χειρὶ ἰσχυρᾷ καὶ ἐτροπώσατο αὐτόν

And Alexander heard and came against him in war, and Ptolemy marched out and met him with a strong force and routed him.

καὶ ἔφυγεν Ἀλέξανδρος εἰς τὴν Ἀραβίαν τοῦ σκεπασθῆναι αὐτὸν ἐκεῖ ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς Πτολεμαῖος ὑψώθη

And Alexander fled into Arabia to find shelter there, but King Ptolemy was exalted.

καὶ ἀφεῖλεν Ζαβδιηλ ὁ Ἄραψ τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τῷ Πτολεμαίῳ

And Zabdiel the Arab cut off the head of Alexander and sent it to Ptolemy.

καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Πτολεμαῖος ἀπέθανεν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ τρίτῃ καὶ οἱ ὄντες ἐν τοῖς ὀχυρώμασιν αὐτοῦ ἀπώλοντο ὑπὸ τῶν ἐν τοῖς ὀχυρώμασιν

And King Ptolemy died on the third day, and those in his strongholds were destroyed by those in the strongholds.

καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Δημήτριος ἔτους ἑβδόμου καὶ ἑξηκοστοῦ καὶ ἑκατοστοῦ

And Demetrius became king in the one hundred sixty-seventh year.

ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις συνήγαγεν Ιωναθαν τοὺς ἐκ τῆς Ιουδαίας τοῦ ἐκπολεμῆσαι τὴν ἄκραν τὴν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἐποίησεν ἐπ' αὐτὴν μηχανὰς πολλάς

In those days Jonathan gathered those from Judea to fight against the citadel in Jerusalem, and he made many siege engines against it.

καὶ ἐπορεύθησάν τινες μισοῦντες τὸ ἔθνος αὐτῶν ἄνδρες παράνομοι πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν αὐτῷ ὅτι Ιωναθαν περικάθηται τὴν ἄκραν

And some lawless men, hating their own nation, went to the king and reported to him that Jonathan was besieging the citadel.

καὶ ἀκούσας ὠργίσθη ὡς δὲ ἤκουσεν εὐθέως ἀναζεύξας ἦλθεν εἰς Πτολεμαίδα καὶ ἔγραψεν Ιωναθαν τοῦ μὴ περικαθῆσθαι καὶ τοῦ ἀπαντῆσαι αὐτὸν αὐτῷ συμμίσγειν εἰς Πτολεμαίδα τὴν ταχίστην

And when he heard, he became angry; and as soon as he heard, he set out at once and came to Ptolemais, and he wrote to Jonathan not to continue besieging it but to meet him in conference at Ptolemais as quickly as possible.

ὡς δὲ ἤκουσεν Ιωναθαν ἐκέλευσεν περικαθῆσθαι καὶ ἐπέλεξεν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων Ισραηλ καὶ τῶν ἱερέων καὶ ἔδωκεν ἑαυτὸν τῷ κινδύνῳ

And when Jonathan heard, he ordered the siege to continue, and he selected from the elders of Israel and from the priests, and he gave himself over to the danger.

καὶ λαβὼν ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον καὶ ἱματισμὸν καὶ ἕτερα ξένια πλείονα καὶ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς Πτολεμαίδα καὶ εὗρεν χάριν ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ

And taking silver and gold and clothing and many other gifts, he went to the king at Ptolemais and found favor before him.

καὶ ἐνετύγχανον κατ' αὐτοῦ τινες ἄνομοι τῶν ἐκ τοῦ ἔθνους

And some lawless men from among the nation kept bringing accusations against him.

καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ βασιλεὺς καθὼς ἐποίησαν αὐτῷ οἱ πρὸ αὐτοῦ καὶ ὕψωσεν αὐτὸν ἐναντίον τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ πάντων

And the king dealt with him as those before him had dealt with him, and he exalted him above all his friends.

καὶ ἔστησεν αὐτῷ τὴν ἀρχιερωσύνην καὶ ὅσα ἄλλα εἶχεν τίμια τὸ πρότερον καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτὸν τῶν πρώτων φίλων ἡγεῖσθαι

And he confirmed for him the high priesthood and whatever other honors he had formerly held, and he made him rank among the foremost friends.

καὶ ἠξίωσεν Ιωναθαν τὸν βασιλέα ποιῆσαι τὴν Ιουδαίαν ἀφορολόγητον καὶ τὰς τρεῖς τοπαρχίας καὶ τὴν Σαμαρῖτιν καὶ ἐπηγγείλατο αὐτῷ τάλαντα τριακόσια

And Jonathan asked the king to make Judea tax-free, together with the three toparchies and Samaria, and he promised him three hundred talents.

καὶ εὐδόκησεν ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἔγραψεν τῷ Ιωναθαν ἐπιστολὰς περὶ πάντων τούτων ἐχούσας τὸν τρόπον τοῦτον

And the king approved and wrote to Jonathan letters concerning all these matters, having the following form.

βασιλεὺς Δημήτριος Ιωναθαν τῷ ἀδελφῷ χαίρειν καὶ ἔθνει Ιουδαίων

King Demetrius to Jonathan his brother, and to the nation of the Jews, greetings.

τὸ ἀντίγραφον τῆς ἐπιστολῆς ἧς ἐγράψαμεν Λασθένει τῷ συγγενεῖ ἡμῶν περὶ ὑμῶν γεγράφαμεν καὶ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ὅπως εἰδῆτε

We have written to you also a copy of the letter that we wrote to Lasthenes our kinsman concerning you, so that you may know.

βασιλεὺς Δημήτριος Λασθένει τῷ πατρὶ χαίρειν

King Demetrius to Lasthenes his father, greetings.

τῷ ἔθνει τῶν Ιουδαίων φίλοις ἡμῶν καὶ συντηροῦσιν τὰ πρὸς ἡμᾶς δίκαια ἐκρίναμεν ἀγαθὸν ποιῆσαι χάριν τῆς ἐξ αὐτῶν εὐνοίας πρὸς ἡμᾶς

Since the nation of the Jews are our friends and keep what is right toward us, we have decided to do good to them because of their goodwill toward us.

ἑστάκαμεν αὐτοῖς τά τε ὅρια τῆς Ιουδαίας καὶ τοὺς τρεῖς νομοὺς Αφαιρεμα καὶ Λυδδα καὶ Ραθαμιν προσετέθησαν τῇ Ιουδαίᾳ ἀπὸ τῆς Σαμαρίτιδος καὶ πάντα τὰ συγκυροῦντα αὐτοῖς πᾶσιν τοῖς θυσιάζουσιν εἰς Ιεροσόλυμα ἀντὶ τῶν βασιλικῶν ὧν ἐλάμβανεν ὁ βασιλεὺς παρ' αὐτῶν τὸ πρότερον κατ' ἐνιαυτὸν ἀπὸ τῶν γενημάτων τῆς γῆς καὶ τῶν ἀκροδρύων

We have fixed for them the borders of Judea, and the three districts of Aphairema, Lydda, and Rathamim have been added to Judea from Samaria, together with everything adjoining them, for all who offer sacrifice in Jerusalem, in place of the royal revenues that the king formerly received from them each year from the produce of the land and from the fruit trees.

καὶ τὰ ἄλλα τὰ ἀνήκοντα ἡμῖν ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν τῶν δεκατῶν καὶ τῶν τελῶν τῶν ἀνηκόντων ἡμῖν καὶ τὰς τοῦ ἁλὸς λίμνας καὶ τοὺς ἀνήκοντας ἡμῖν στεφάνους πάντα ἐπαρκέσομεν αὐτοῖς

And all the other things belonging to us from now on, the tithes and the taxes belonging to us, and the salt lakes, and the crowns belonging to us, we will remit all these to them.

καὶ οὐκ ἀθετηθήσεται οὐδὲ ἓν τούτων ἀπὸ τοῦ νῦν εἰς τὸν ἅπαντα χρόνον

And not one of these things shall be set aside from now on for all time.

νῦν οὖν ἐπιμέλεσθε τοῦ ποιῆσαι τούτων ἀντίγραφον καὶ δοθήτω Ιωναθαν καὶ τεθήτω ἐν τῷ ὄρει τῷ ἁγίῳ ἐν τόπῳ ἐπισήμῳ

Now therefore see to it that a copy of these things be made and given to Jonathan, and that it be placed on the holy mountain in a conspicuous place.

καὶ εἶδεν Δημήτριος ὁ βασιλεὺς ὅτι ἡσύχασεν ἡ γῆ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ ἀνθειστήκει καὶ ἀπέλυσεν πάσας τὰς δυνάμεις αὐτοῦ ἕκαστον εἰς τὸν ἴδιον τόπον πλὴν τῶν ξένων δυνάμεων ὧν ἐξενολόγησεν ἀπὸ τῶν νήσων τῶν ἐθνῶν καὶ ἤχθραναν αὐτῷ πᾶσαι αἱ δυνάμεις αἱ ἀπὸ τῶν πατέρων

And King Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him and that nothing opposed him, and he dismissed all his forces, each one to his own place, except the foreign troops that he had recruited from the islands of the nations; and all the forces inherited from his fathers became hostile to him.

Τρύφων δὲ ἦν τῶν παρὰ Ἀλεξάνδρου τὸ πρότερον καὶ εἶδεν ὅτι πᾶσαι αἱ δυνάμεις καταγογγύζουσιν κατὰ τοῦ Δημητρίου καὶ ἐπορεύθη πρὸς Ιμαλκουε τὸν Ἄραβα ὃς ἔτρεφεν Ἀντίοχον τὸ παιδάριον τὸν τοῦ Ἀλεξάνδρου

Now Trypho had formerly been one of Alexander's supporters, and he saw that all the forces were grumbling against Demetrius; and he went to Imalkue the Arab, who was rearing Antiochus, the young son of Alexander.

καὶ προσήδρευεν αὐτῷ ὅπως παραδοῖ αὐτὸν αὐτῷ ὅπως βασιλεύσῃ ἀντὶ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτῷ ὅσα συνετέλεσεν ὁ Δημήτριος καὶ τὴν ἔχθραν ἣν ἐχθραίνουσιν αὐτῷ αἱ δυνάμεις αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ ἡμέρας πολλάς

And he pressed him so that he might hand him over to him, so that he might reign in place of his father; and he reported to him all that Demetrius had done and the hostility with which his own forces were treating him, and he remained there many days.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ιωναθαν πρὸς Δημήτριον τὸν βασιλέα ἵνα ἐκβάλῃ τοὺς ἐκ τῆς ἄκρας ἐξ Ιερουσαλημ καὶ τοὺς ἐν τοῖς ὀχυρώμασιν ἦσαν γὰρ πολεμοῦντες τὸν Ισραηλ

And Jonathan sent to Demetrius the king, asking that he remove those in the citadel from Jerusalem and those in the strongholds, for they were making war against Israel.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Δημήτριος πρὸς Ιωναθαν λέγων οὐ ταῦτα μόνον ποιήσω σοι καὶ τῷ ἔθνει σου ἀλλὰ δόξῃ δοξάσω σε καὶ τὸ ἔθνος σου ἐὰν εὐκαιρίας τύχω

And Demetrius sent to Jonathan, saying, 'Not only these things will I do for you and for your nation, but I will greatly honor you and your nation, if I find the opportunity.'

νῦν οὖν ὀρθῶς ποιήσεις ἀποστείλας μοι ἄνδρας οἳ συμμαχήσουσίν μοι ὅτι ἀπέστησαν πᾶσαι αἱ δυνάμεις μου

Now therefore you will do rightly if you send me men who will fight alongside me, because all my forces have defected.

καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Ιωναθαν ἄνδρας τρισχιλίους δυνατοὺς ἰσχύι αὐτῷ εἰς Ἀντιόχειαν καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα καὶ ηὐφράνθη ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ τῇ ἐφόδῳ αὐτῶν

And Jonathan sent him three thousand men mighty in strength to Antioch, and they came to the king, and the king rejoiced at their arrival.

καὶ ἐπισυνήχθησαν οἱ ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως εἰς μέσον τῆς πόλεως εἰς ἀνδρῶν δώδεκα μυριάδας καὶ ἠβούλοντο ἀνελεῖν τὸν βασιλέα

And those from the city gathered in the middle of the city, to the number of one hundred twenty thousand men, and they wanted to kill the king.

καὶ ἔφυγεν ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς τὴν αὐλήν καὶ κατελάβοντο οἱ ἐκ τῆς πόλεως τὰς διόδους τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤρξαντο πολεμεῖν

And the king fled into the court, and those from the city seized the streets of the city and began to fight.

καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοὺς Ιουδαίους ἐπὶ βοήθειαν καὶ ἐπισυνήχθησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντες ἅμα καὶ διεσπάρησαν ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ ἀπέκτειναν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ εἰς μυριάδας δέκα

And the king called the Jews for help, and they all gathered to him at once and spread out in the city, and on that day they killed as many as ten thousand.

καὶ ἐνεπύρισαν τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἔλαβον σκῦλα πολλὰ ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ καὶ ἔσωσαν τὸν βασιλέα

And they set the city on fire and took much spoil on that day, and they saved the king.

καὶ εἶδον οἱ ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως ὅτι κατεκράτησαν οἱ Ιουδαῖοι τῆς πόλεως ὡς ἠβούλοντο καὶ ἠσθένησαν ταῖς διανοίαις αὐτῶν καὶ ἐκέκραξαν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα μετὰ δεήσεως λέγοντες

And those from the city saw that the Jews had gained control of the city as they wished, and they lost heart and cried out to the king with supplication, saying,

δὸς ἡμῖν δεξιὰς καὶ παυσάσθωσαν οἱ Ιουδαῖοι πολεμοῦντες ἡμᾶς καὶ τὴν πόλιν

'Give us pledges of peace, and let the Jews stop fighting against us and the city.'

καὶ ἔρριψαν τὰ ὅπλα καὶ ἐποίησαν εἰρήνην καὶ ἐδοξάσθησαν οἱ Ιουδαῖοι ἐναντίον τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἐνώπιον πάντων τῶν ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν εἰς Ιερουσαλημ ἔχοντες σκῦλα πολλά

And they threw down their weapons and made peace, and the Jews were honored before the king and before all those in his kingdom, and they returned to Jerusalem with much spoil.

καὶ ἐκάθισεν Δημήτριος ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ θρόνου τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡσύχασεν ἡ γῆ ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ

And King Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him.

καὶ ἐψεύσατο πάντα ὅσα εἶπεν καὶ ἠλλοτριώθη τῷ Ιωναθαν καὶ οὐκ ἀνταπέδωκεν τὰς εὐνοίας ἃς ἀνταπέδωκεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἔθλιβεν αὐτὸν σφόδρα

And he proved false in everything that he had said, and he became estranged from Jonathan and did not repay him for the favors that Jonathan had rendered him, and he afflicted him severely.

μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἀπέστρεψεν Τρύφων καὶ Ἀντίοχος μετ' αὐτοῦ παιδάριον νεώτερον καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν καὶ ἐπέθετο διάδημα

But after these things Trypho returned, and with him came Antiochus, a younger boy; and he reigned and put on the diadem.

καὶ ἐπισυνήχθησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν πᾶσαι αἱ δυνάμεις ἃς ἀπεσκοράκισεν Δημήτριος καὶ ἐπολέμησαν πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ ἔφυγεν καὶ ἐτροπώθη

And all the forces that Demetrius had cast off gathered to him, and they fought against him, and he fled and was defeated.

καὶ ἔλαβεν Τρύφων τὰ θηρία καὶ κατεκράτησεν τῆς Ἀντιοχείας

And Trypho took the elephants and gained control of Antioch.

καὶ ἔγραψεν Ἀντίοχος ὁ νεώτερος Ιωναθη λέγων ἵστημί σοι τὴν ἀρχιερωσύνην καὶ καθίστημί σε ἐπὶ τῶν τεσσάρων νομῶν καὶ εἶναί σε τῶν φίλων τοῦ βασιλέως

And Antiochus the Younger wrote to Jonathan, saying, 'I confirm for you the high priesthood and appoint you over the four districts and make you one of the king's Friends.'
