The Book of Baruch, Chapter 1ΒΑΡΟΥΧ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Exiles in Babylon confess Jerusalem's fall, send gifts toward the temple, and set the book's penitential frame.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Baruch 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Baruch 1 functions as the narrative and liturgical preface to the book: it situates Baruch's writing in Babylon after Jerusalem's fall, describes its public reading before Jeconiah and the exilic community, records the gathering of money and sacred vessels for Jerusalem, and includes the message sent to the priests and people still connected to the temple. The latter half shifts into a communal confession formula: prayers are requested for Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar so that the exiles may live under their shadow, and the readers in Jerusalem are instructed to recite a penitential acknowledgment that righteousness belongs to the Lord while shame belongs to Judah and Jerusalem. The chapter is therefore both historical notice and liturgical script, binding exile, temple, confession, and political subjection into one common act of remembrance and repentance.
