Theme

Jerusalem exchanges mourning for splendor as God levels the way for his scattered people to return in glory.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Baruch 5 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Baruch 5 is a compact Zion-restoration oracle built almost entirely from clothing, enthronement, procession, and landscape imagery. Jerusalem is commanded to put off mourning and to clothe herself in the beauty, righteousness, and glory that come from God. The nations are then made spectators to her renewed splendor, and the chapter's central movement depicts the children returning from west and east at the word of the Holy One. In the latter half the imagery becomes exodus-like: mountains are lowered, valleys filled, the land leveled, fragrant woods shading Israel, and God himself leading the procession in joy. The whole chapter closes with a vision of Israel guided in the light of divine glory and sustained by mercy and righteousness from God.
