Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Bel and the Dragon here follows the Theodotionic Daniel tradition preserved in CCAT's 60.BelTh.mlxx; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Bel and the Dragon 1 is a composite anti-idolatry narrative joined to Daniel's cycle: first Bel's priests are exposed by forensic ingenuity, then the living dragon is destroyed without conventional weapons, and finally Daniel survives another descent into the lions' den until the pagan king confesses the living God. The opening Bel episode is deliberately procedural, much like Susanna: sealed doors, hidden access, ash on the temple floor, and exposed footprints all make the fraud visible through testable evidence rather than private intuition. The dragon scene then shifts from fraud to power, mocking the claim that a visibly living creature is therefore divine; Daniel kills it with cakes of pitch, fat, and hair, a gesture both comic and polemical. The closing lions'-den episode, with Habakkuk miraculously transported to feed Daniel, binds the tale back into the larger Danielic theology of faithful endurance under imperial pressure. Throughout, the repeated contrast is between χειροποίητα or creaturely objects of worship and the living God who creates heaven and earth, remembers his servant, and judges false religion. Versification follows the LXX.
