The Book of Ecclesiastes, Chapter 1ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣΤΗΣ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Vanity of vanities frames Qoheleth's opening meditation on recurring cycles, weary perception, and the frustrated search for lasting gain.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Ecclesiastes 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006); the ancient text itself is public domain, and the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter opens Qoheleth's meditation with the programmatic cry of 'vanity of vanities,' then tests that verdict across recurring natural cycles, the fatigue of speech and perception, the absence of anything truly new, and the speaker's own royal inquiry into wisdom. The Septuagint preserves the chapter's iterative rhetoric and several memorable Greek turns, especially προαίρεσις πνεύματος, which here signals a frustrated striving that matches the chapter's relentless diagnosis of futility under heaven.
