Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Ecclesiastes 7 gathers some of Qoheleth's sharpest wisdom sayings into a single chapter about reputation, mourning, anger, patience, providence, justice, and the frustrating limits of human inquiry.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Ecclesiastes 7 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Ecclesiastes 7 gathers some of Qoheleth's sharpest wisdom sayings into a single chapter about reputation, mourning, anger, patience, providence, justice, and the frustrating limits of human inquiry. The chapter repeatedly privileges hard-earned sobriety over easy pleasure: the house of mourning teaches more than the house of feasting, patience surpasses pride, and fearful reverence steadies where self-confident wisdom fails. Yet the chapter does not resolve into tidy moral arithmetic. Qoheleth still sees righteous people perishing, wicked people enduring, and the search for wisdom receding just as he reaches for it. What remains is not mastery but a chastened posture before God: receive correction, avoid extremes, distrust the heart's rashness, and recognize that the human creature, made upright, has multiplied his own devices.

ἀγαθὸν ὄνομα ὑπὲρ ἔλαιον ἀγαθὸν καὶ ἡμέρα τοῦ θανάτου ὑπὲρ ἡμέραν γενέσεως αὐτοῦ

A good name is better than good oil, and the day of death is better than the day of one's birth.

The chapter opens with a jarring value reversal: lasting moral reputation and the completed verdict of a life outweigh luxury and mere beginning.
