The Book of Ezekiel, Chapter 1ΙΕΖΕΚΙΗΛ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The throne-chariot vision reveals the Lord's mobile glory in exile.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Ezekiel 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft); the ancient text itself is public domain, while no critical apparatus is reproduced here. The opening chapter establishes the setting of Ezekiel's ministry among the deportees by the river Chebar and introduces the book's dominant visionary grammar: storm-cloud, fire, living creatures, wheels full of eyes, crystalline firmament, and the sapphire-like throne. The Greek is often close to the Hebrew yet not mechanically so; it tends to intensify visual sequence by parataxis and repeated vision formulas such as καὶ εἶδον / καὶ ἰδού. Names are transliterated in recognizably Greek dress: Ιεζεκιηλ for Ezekiel, Βουζι for Buzi, and Χοβαρ for the Chebar canal. A notable feature of the LXX chapter is its compressed numbering: the material commonly counted as MT 1:14 is absent as a separate verse here, so the chapter proceeds from LXX 1:13 to 1:15. Within the wider Christian tradition this throne vision becomes a major source for apocalyptic and christological imagery, especially in Revelation 4-5, where the living creatures and heavenly throne scene are reshaped in explicitly liturgical form.

καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ τριακοστῷ ἔτει ἐν τῷ τετάρτῳ μηνὶ πέμπτῃ τοῦ μηνὸς καὶ ἐγὼ ἤμην ἐν μέσῳ τῆς αἰχμαλωσίας ἐπὶ τοῦ ποταμοῦ τοῦ Χοβαρ καὶ ἠνοίχθησαν οἱ οὐρανοί καὶ εἶδον ὁράσεις θεοῦ

And it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth day of the month, while I was among the captives by the river Chebar, that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God.

Narrative opening / visionary datingΚαί
The opening uses the standard biblical narrative formula καὶ ἐγένετο to date the vision and to move from historical exile into prophetic sight. The climax of the verse is the passive opening of heaven and Ezekiel's seeing of divine visions.
