Theme

Tyre the merchant ship sinks, and the nations lament her collapse.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Ezekiel 27 turns the oracle against Tyre into a sustained lament over maritime magnificence brought to ruin. The city is imagined first as a perfectly crafted ship, assembled from the best woods, fabrics, ivory, rowers, pilots, soldiers, and harbor defenses drawn from an international network. The middle of the chapter becomes an enormous catalog of merchants and cargoes, making Tyre appear not merely wealthy but world-defining: many nations, islands, kings, and caravan routes converge in her mixed trade. That very fullness sets up the collapse. Once the ship is driven into deep water, the south wind shatters it in the heart of the sea, and all its crews, goods, warriors, and associated peoples go down together. The final stanzas shift from inventory to public lament, as mariners, islanders, and merchants react with horror to the disappearance of the city that enriched and intimidated them. The chapter's theology is not anti-trade in itself; rather, it exposes the fragility of imperial-commercial beauty when it becomes self-sufficient splendor before the Lord.
