The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 33ΙΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ ΛΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Temple-sermon accusations fail to silence Jeremiah under prophetic precedent.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Jeremiah 33 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. In the Septuagint order this chapter preserves Jeremiah's temple-court trial. The opening movement returns to the reign of Jehoiakim and places Jeremiah under a direct command to stand in the Lord's court and proclaim a message of conditional destruction: if Judah refuses the law and the prophets, the temple will become like Shiloh and Jerusalem a curse among the nations. The second movement narrates the immediate backlash. Priests, false prophets, and people seize Jeremiah and demand death, not because his words are unclear, but because they understand their force all too well. The hearing before Judah's officials then turns on the status of Jeremiah's speech. He insists that the Lord sent him, repeats the call to amend conduct, and warns that killing him would place innocent blood on city and people alike. The closing section introduces memory as legal argument. Elders cite Micah's earlier oracle against Zion and recall that Hezekiah feared the Lord instead of killing the prophet; the contrasting case of Uriah shows what royal violence can do, while Ahikam's support explains why Jeremiah is not handed over to the mob. The unit thus binds together prophetic judgment, the possibility of repentance, and the peril of rejecting a true word from the Lord. Greek versification is followed here.
