The Book of Jeremiah, Chapter 48ΙΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ ΜΗ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Gedaliah is murdered, captives are seized, and the remnant flees in fear.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Jeremiah 48 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. In the Septuagint order this chapter narrates the collapse of Gedaliah's short administration at Mizpah. Ishmael murders Gedaliah during shared bread, kills Babylonian personnel and Judeans with him, and then compounds the crime by slaughtering mourning pilgrims from the north and carrying away the remaining people. The great cistern of Asa becomes a grave, turning old royal defensive architecture into an image of inner-Judean ruin. Johanan's rescue of the captives prevents total destruction, but the community is still governed by fear of Babylonian reprisal, which explains the movement toward Egypt that will dominate the next chapters. Versification follows the LXX.
