Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Theme

The shepherd Lord leads, restores, hosts, and shelters through the valley of death.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 22 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition. In LXX numbering this is the shepherd psalm corresponding to Psalm 23 in the Hebrew tradition. The poem is a compact confession of confidence that moves from pastoral guidance to table fellowship: the Lord shepherds, settles, restores, guides, accompanies through death-shadow, prepares a banquet in the face of enemies, anoints the head, and finally pursues the worshiper with mercy into lasting habitation in the house of the Lord. Several Septuagintal turns deserve notice: the Lord causes the speaker to dwell "in a place of green grass," nourishes him beside "water of rest," and the closing line is expressed with an articular infinitive, "my dwelling in the house of the Lord," emphasizing an abiding state rather than a momentary visit. The vivid phrase τὸ ποτήριόν σου μεθύσκον ὡς κράτιστον heightens the host-metaphor by portraying the cup as richly intoxicating and excellent. Versification follows the LXX.

ψαλμὸς τῷ Δαυιδ κύριος ποιμαίνει με καὶ οὐδέν με ὑστερήσει

A psalm for David. The Lord shepherds me, and nothing shall fail me.

Opening confidence in the shepherd Lordκύριος ποιμαίνει με
After the brief superscription, the psalm opens with an unembarrassed thesis statement: the Lord himself is the speaker's shepherd, so deprivation is denied at the outset.

He restored my soul; he guided me upon paths of righteousness for the sake of his name.

Provision now reaches inward life and outward direction together. The restored self is led along right paths, and the final ground of that guidance is not the speaker's merit but the Lord's own name.

For even if I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I shall not fear evils, because you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comforted me.

Fearless confidence in dark passageἐὰν γὰρ καὶ πορευθῶ
The psalm does not deny the reality of deadly darkness; it denies that such darkness has the final power to terrify. The reason is intensely personal: the address turns to 'you,' and the shepherd's rod and staff become instruments of consoling presence.
