Theme

The Lord's upright word made the world and still watches the nations with steadfast care.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 32 follows the standard Septuagint form represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition. In LXX numbering this chapter corresponds to Psalm 33 in the Hebrew tradition and is a communal hymn of praise that moves from summons to song, to meditation on the Lord's upright word and faithful works, to celebration of his creative sovereignty over sea and nations, and finally to a confession that no earthly power saves apart from his watchful mercy. The poem closes by turning cosmic praise into communal trust and petition: the people who wait for the Lord ask that the mercy on which they hope may rest on them. Versification follows the LXX.
