Theme

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 47 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition. In Hebrew numbering this chapter corresponds to Psalm 48 and celebrates Zion as the city of the great King. The poem begins with praise for the Lord's presence in his holy city, recounts the panic of hostile kings who collapse before that presence, turns to liturgical recollection of divine mercy and worldwide praise, and ends by inviting a processional survey of Zion so that her God-grounded security may be told to generations yet to come. Versification follows the LXX.
