The Book of Psalms, Chapter 49ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΜΘ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

From Zion the covenant God judges hollow sacrifice, exposes the wicked, and calls for true thanksgiving.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 49 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as represented in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition. In Hebrew numbering this poem corresponds to Psalm 50, the great Asaphite oracle in which God appears from Zion as covenant judge. It unfolds in two large movements. Verses 1-15 stage a cosmic theophany and clarify the nature of acceptable worship: God summons heaven and earth, denies that sacrifice feeds him, and redirects his people toward thanksgiving, vow-keeping, and prayer in affliction. Verses 16-23 then expose the hypocrisy of the wicked worshiper who recites the covenant while embracing theft, adultery, slander, and forgetfulness of God. The closing line gathers the whole psalm into a concise rule of worship: praise glorifies God, and the rightly ordered way is the path on which his salvation is shown. Versification follows the LXX.
