The Book of Psalms, Chapter 85ΨΑΛΜΟΙ ΠΕ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

A poor suppliant pleads for mercy, an undivided heart, and a saving sign against violent foes.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 85 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. A poor suppliant presses urgent petitions, then widens into praise of God's incomparable mercy before asking for an undivided heart and a saving sign against violent foes. The opening verses stack imperatives asking God to listen, guard, show mercy, gladden, and attend, all grounded in the singer's poverty, dependence, and constant crying. From there the psalm widens into praise: the Lord is uniquely good, incomparable among the gods, and destined to receive worship from all the nations because he alone works wonders. The closing movement asks to be taught God's way, remembers rescue from the depths, names the hostility of violent enemies, and appeals to God's compassionate character for one more saving sign that will shame those who hate the psalmist. Versification follows the LXX.
