Theme

Darkness, isolation, and unrelieved affliction make this one of the Psalter's bleakest prayers.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 87 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This Korahite lament, attributed to Heman the Israelite, is one of the bleakest prayers in the Psalter. The speaker calls to the God of his salvation, yet describes himself as already counted among those going down to the pit, pressed beneath divine wrath, cut off from companions, and shut inside darkness and the shadow of death. The middle movement presses God with rhetorical questions about whether the dead can declare his mercy or truth, so that praise from the grave becomes an argument for renewed deliverance. Unlike many laments, the psalm never turns into visible rescue; it ends with friend and neighbor removed, leaving the prayer suspended in affliction. Versification follows the LXX.
