Theme

The Lord's everlasting being is set against the brevity, frailty, and sorrow of human life.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 89 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The Mosaic prayer that contrasts the Lord's everlasting being with the brevity and frailty of human life. It opens by naming God as Israel's refuge before creation itself, then turns to the mortality of the children of Adam, whose years fade like grass under divine wrath. The middle movement reads that mortality morally: sins stand in the light of God's face, human days collapse under anger, and even long life is marked by toil, pain, and chastening. The closing petitions ask for a wise heart, for the Lord to return in mercy, to gladden his servants after affliction, to let his work be seen by their children, and to establish the work of human hands beneath his own beauty. Versification follows the LXX.
