Theme

The holy king in Zion is praised with Moses, Aaron, and Samuel as majesty is joined to mercy.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Psalms 98 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The enthroned Lord is praised as holy king in Zion, yet the psalm also remembers Moses, Aaron, and Samuel to show that his majesty is joined to hearing, forgiveness, and just judgment. The opening proclaims the Lord's reign above the cherubim and over the trembling earth, then celebrates his love of justice in Jacob and calls worshipers to bow at his footstool. The second half turns to Moses, Aaron, and Samuel as witnesses that this holy king truly hears prayer, speaks from the cloud, forgives his servants, and yet avenges their deeds. It closes by returning to worship on his holy mountain because the Lord our God is holy. Versification follows the LXX.
