Theme

Tobit 8 is the book's great reversal-of-the-wedding-night chapter.

Translation & textual notes

Tobit 8 is the book's great reversal-of-the-wedding-night chapter. What had previously meant death for Sarah's husbands becomes, through remembered instruction, prayer, and divine mercy, a night of deliverance, peaceful sleep, and public thanksgiving. The chapter is especially important because it frames marriage theologically: Tobias roots the union in creation, renounces lust, asks to grow old with Sarah, and turns the bedchamber into a place of covenantal petition rather than private impulse.
