Theme

The opening declaration identifies the newly marked site as the house of the LORD and the altar of burnt offering for Israel, making explicit what chapter 21 implied.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 1 Chronicles 22 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs–Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The opening declaration identifies the newly marked site as the house of the LORD and the altar of burnt offering for Israel, making explicit what chapter 21 implied. David then amasses stone, timber, iron, and bronze on a scale suited to a great sanctuary 'of fame and glory throughout all lands.' Solomon is young and inexperienced, so David's role is to prepare and to exhort. The charge stresses not architectural technique but covenant fidelity: success depends on the LORD's presence and on keeping the law. The chapter therefore binds material provision to spiritual commission. In the Greek, the abundance vocabulary and imperative tone come through clearly, presenting David as the king who transforms judged space into prepared worship.

And David said, "This is the house of the Lord God, and this is the altar for burnt offering for Israel."

David identifies Ornan's site as the future temple locationκαὶ εἶπεν Δαυιδ
What chapter 21 disclosed through event is now stated outright. David names the place as both house-site and altar-site, turning halted wrath into settled cultic vocation.

but the word of the Lord came upon me, saying, 'You have shed blood in abundance and have made great wars; you shall not build a house for my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth before me.'

David explains the divine prohibitionκαὶ ἐγένετο
The reason given is not moral collapse in general but the incompatible character of a reign marked by bloodshed. David's military vocation served Israel, yet it disqualifies him from erecting the sanctuary of settled peace.
