1 Chronicles 21ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Α′ ΚΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The chapter opens with the stark statement that Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number the people, shifting the emphasis from Samuel's framing while retaining divine sovereignty over the resulting judgment.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 1 Chronicles 21 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs–Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter opens with the stark statement that Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number the people, shifting the emphasis from Samuel's framing while retaining divine sovereignty over the resulting judgment. Joab's protest shows that even royal policy can be visibly wrong. Once the census is complete, David confesses, and the prophet Gad offers the terrible choice that leads to plague. The vision of the angel, David's self-offering on behalf of the people, and the purchase of Ornan's threshing floor bring the narrative to its real destination: the place where wrath is stopped becomes the place where the temple will stand. The Greek renders the chapter with solemn economy. This is the hinge by which royal failure is converted into cultic future.

καὶ ἔστη διάβολος ἐν τῷ Ισραηλ καὶ ἐπέσεισεν τὸν Δαυιδ τοῦ ἀριθμῆσαι τὸν Ισραηλ

And the Adversary stood up against Israel and incited David to number Israel.

The census begins with hostile incitementκαὶ ἔστη
Chronicles names the immediate instigator with unusual starkness. Yet the chapter will not let David evade responsibility: the temptation is external, but the sinful command will still be his own.

And King David said to Joab and to the commanders of the army, "Go, number Israel from Beersheba to Dan, and bring the count to me, and I shall know their number."

David issues the order to count the peopleκαὶ εἶπεν
The royal imperative turns the inward impulse into public policy. The geographic merism from Beersheba to Dan frames the census as a grasping survey of the whole kingdom.

And Joab said, "May the Lord add to his people a hundredfold as many as they are; are they not all servants of my lord the king before the eyes of my lord the king? Why does my lord seek this thing, so that it should not become a sin for Israel?"

Joab objects that the census will bring guiltκαὶ εἶπεν Ιωαβ
Joab's protest is the moral warning the king ignores. Even this hard military commander recognizes that counting the people in this spirit would transform royal administration into covenantal offense.

But Levi and Benjamin he did not number among them, for the king's word had become abhorrent to Joab.

Joab leaves the count morally and practically incompleteκαὶ τὸν Λευι
The omission of Levi and Benjamin shows that Joab never gave himself wholly to the task. The census is both executed and resisted, which sharpens the sense that the enterprise is fundamentally disordered.

καὶ ἔδωκεν κύριος θάνατον ἐν Ισραηλ καὶ ἔπεσον ἐξ Ισραηλ ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες ἀνδρῶν

And the Lord sent pestilence upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.

The chosen judgment strikes Israelκαὶ ἔδωκεν
The brevity of the report intensifies its horror. The numerical result reverses the logic of the census: David counted to secure mastery, and now the nation is counted by death.

And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it; but as he was destroying, the Lord saw and relented concerning the calamity, and he said to the destroying angel, "Enough; let your hand cease." And the angel of the Lord was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

This is the chapter's turning point. Judgment reaches the holy city, yet the Lord's seeing and relenting arrest destruction precisely at the site that will become the locus of sacrificial mercy.
