Theme

The chapter begins with the two surviving Aaronide lines after the death of Nadab and Abihu, then develops the twenty-four priestly divisions that will shape temple service.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 1 Chronicles 24 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs–Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter begins with the two surviving Aaronide lines after the death of Nadab and Abihu, then develops the twenty-four priestly divisions that will shape temple service. The use of lots before king, priests, Levites, and family heads emphasizes both order and fairness: sacred office is not seized by private ambition. The Eleazar houses outnumber Ithamar, yet both lines are integrated into the same system. The close extends the administrative vision by naming further Levitical heads. The Greek handles the repeated names and procedural formulas with the same plain precision that suits a roster. Read theologically, the chapter says that stable worship requires publicly ordered succession as much as it requires zeal.

And for the sons of Aaron there were divisions. The sons of Aaron were Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

And Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests, sons of Aaron.

And David, along with Zadok from the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech from the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to their visitation in their ministry by their fathers' houses.

And more sons of Eleazar were found as heads of the mighty men than of the sons of Ithamar; and he divided them, sixteen heads of fathers' houses for the sons of Eleazar and eight for the sons of Ithamar, by their fathers' houses.

And he divided them by lots, these with those, for there were chiefs of the holy things and chiefs of God among the sons of Eleazar and among the sons of Ithamar.
