1 Chronicles 6ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Α′ Ϛ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

This chapter is among the clearest disclosures of the Chronicler's theological center of gravity.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 1 Chronicles 6 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter is among the clearest disclosures of the Chronicler's theological center of gravity. Levi is not a marginal tribe tucked beside royal history, but the tribe through which Israel's worshiping life is ordered, remembered, and territorially embedded. The material proceeds in four closely related movements: the main Levitical houses and the Aaronide succession (vv. 1-15, 35-38), the ordered pedigrees of the sanctuary singers (vv. 16-32), the definition of priestly and Levitical service (vv. 33-34), and the long list of Levitical towns distributed throughout Israel (vv. 39-66). Genealogy, liturgy, and land are thus inseparable. The Greek style remains deliberately archival, preserving repetitive υἱός formulas, additive καί-linkage, and dense transliterated name-strings rather than smoothing them into freer prose. Particularly significant is the placement of the singers inside the genealogy itself: praise before the sanctuary is hereditary, authorized, and structurally woven into Israel's constitution. The closing town lists, though administratively dry at first glance, make a large theological claim: the ministers of the sanctuary are scattered across the tribes so that sacred service belongs to the whole national landscape, not to an isolated clerical enclave.

υἱοὶ Λευι Γεδσων Κααθ καὶ Μεραρι

The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Levitical heading: Levi's three sonsυἱοὶ Λευι
The chapter opens by naming Levi's three foundational branches. The terse nominative list establishes the hereditary architecture that governs everything that follows: priesthood, song, and settlement all arise from these lines.

And these are the names of the sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei.

Sub-branch: the sons of Gershonκαὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα
The register narrows from Levi as a whole to Gershon in particular. The formula 'these are the names' gives the line an archival, enumerative tone rather than a narrative one.

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

Parallel sub-branch: the sons of Kohathυἱοὶ Κααθ
A second Levitical branch is set alongside Gershon. Kohath is especially important for what follows, since the priestly and musical lines will repeatedly trace themselves through him.

The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. And these are the clans of Levi according to their families.

Parallel sub-branch: the sons of Merari and the clan summaryυἱοὶ Μεραρι
Merari completes the triad of Levitical houses. The closing remark about the 'clans of Levi' signals that these short lists are not casual name strings but the formal family framework of the tribe.

καὶ οὗτοι οὓς κατέστησεν Δαυιδ ἐπὶ χεῖρας ᾀδόντων ἐν οἴκῳ κυρίου ἐν τῇ καταπαύσει τῆς κιβωτοῦ

And these are the men whom David appointed over the service of the singers in the house of the Lord, after the ark came to rest.

Transition from genealogy to Davidic liturgical appointmentκαὶ οὗτοι
The register now pivots from descent alone to institutional service. David's appointment of singers interprets genealogy dynamically: Levitical lineage issues in ordered worship before the sanctuary.
