Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 1 Esdras 2 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Architectural division between restoration and resistance governs the chapter. First comes the fulfillment of Jeremiah in the decree of Cyrus, whose royal proclamation authorizes temple rebuilding and elicits a stirred, material response from Judah, Benjamin, priests, Levites, and their supporters (vv. 1-6). That restoration is made visible in the return of the temple vessels, counted carefully under Persian oversight (vv. 7-11). The second half reverses the atmosphere by introducing accusations sent to Artaxerxes from provincial officials who frame Jerusalem as a perennial rebel and a fiscal threat to empire (vv. 12-18). Artaxerxes accepts the logic, orders the builders stopped, and the work is forcibly suspended until Darius (vv. 19-26). The chapter therefore insists that return from exile is genuinely initiated by God and empire alike, yet it is never unopposed. The restoration project lives under both providential authorization and political contest.
