The First Book of Esdras, Chapter 9ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Α′ Θ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Structural compositeness marks the chapter.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 1 Esdras 9 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as preserved in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition, an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Structural compositeness marks the chapter. Verses 1-36 correspond to the great post-exilic assembly over foreign marriages: Ezra's private mourning becomes a public covenant inquiry, the returned community accepts separation as obedience, and the offenders are registered family by family until the matter is completed. Verses 37-55 then move into seventh-month material parallel to Nehemiah 7:73-8:12, shifting from purge to renewal by Torah. In 1 Esdras the juxtaposition is theologically apt: the community that has been purified must also be reconstituted by hearing Moses. The chapter therefore binds repentance, judicial process, public reading, explanation, and festal joy into one restoration sequence.
