The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 1ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Solomon seeks wisdom before God at Gibeon, and royal splendor follows as a gift rather than a starting point.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter functions as the Chronicler's royal overture to Solomon's reign. It begins with the king's public consolidation (v. 1), moves at once to the old central sanctuary at Gibeon where the bronze altar and Mosaic tent still stand (vv. 2-6), and then places the decisive theological turning point in the night theophany where Solomon asks not for domination but for wisdom fit to judge the people (vv. 7-12). Only after that gift has been granted does the chapter widen into royal abundance: Jerusalem fills with silver, gold, horses, chariots, and international trade (vv. 13-17). The final verse (v. 18) deliberately pivots from wealth to vocation, marking the building of the house for the divine name as the true end toward which the royal strengthening has been ordered. The Greek style is strongly paratactic, with repeated καί-clauses carrying the narrative forward in steady sequence; yet the chapter is not merely annalistic. Its arrangement insists that Solomonic greatness is legitimate only when temple-seeking worship, covenant memory, and divinely granted discernment stand ahead of imperial display.

And Solomon son of David was strengthened over his kingdom, and the Lord his God was with him and magnified him exceedingly.

Royal incipit: divine strengthening of Solomon's ruleκαὶ
The opening sentence joins political consolidation to divine presence. Solomon's reign is not introduced as a merely human succession: the Lord's being with him explains why the kingdom becomes firm and exalted.

And Solomon and all the assembly with him went to the high place in Gibeon, for there was the tent of witness of God, which Moses the servant of the Lord had made in the wilderness.

Procession to the Mosaic sanctuary at Gibeonκαὶ
The Chronicler anchors Solomon's worship at Gibeon in Mosaic memory. The tent in the wilderness is still narratively operative, so Solomon's temple project begins in continuity with the older sanctuary economy.

But David had brought up the ark of God from the city of Kiriath-jearim, because he had prepared for it a tent in Jerusalem.

Clarification about the ark's separate locationἀλλὰ
This explanatory aside distinguishes the ark's Jerusalem location from the older Gibeon shrine. The chapter therefore holds together two sacred centers inherited from Davidic and Mosaic history.

And the bronze altar that Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur had made was there before the tabernacle of the Lord, and Solomon and the assembly sought it out.

Attention fixed on the bronze altarκαὶ
The narrative narrows from the general sanctuary to the specific altar. By naming Bezalel, the text again reaches back to the tabernacle tradition and presents Solomon's worship as deliberately rooted in inherited craft and cult.

And Solomon said to God, 'You have shown great mercy to David my father, and you have made me king in his place.'

Solomon grounds his request in Davidic mercyκαὶ
Solomon begins not with self-assertion but with recollection of God's covenant kindness to David. His accession is received as a continuation of prior mercy, not as independent achievement.

And now, Lord God, let your word be confirmed for David my father, because you have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.

Appeal to covenant promise under the burden of ruleκαὶ
The request is framed by promise and by the enormity of the people. The image of the dust of the earth recalls patriarchal abundance and makes kingship appear administratively and theologically weighty.

Now give me wisdom and understanding, and I shall go out before this people and come in, for who can judge this great people of yours?'

Central petition: wisdom for public governmentνῦν
The paired idiom of going out and coming in names the full exercise of royal leadership. Solomon asks for the inward gift needed to govern God's people, not for private prestige or victory.

And God said to Solomon, 'Because this was in your heart, and you did not ask for riches, wealth, glory, or the life of your enemies, nor did you ask for many days, but asked for wisdom and understanding for yourself so that you might judge my people over whom I made you king,'

Divine approval of Solomon's prioritiesκαὶ
God interprets the request by contrasting it with the usual royal desires. The king is commended precisely because he subordinated personal advantage to the judicial care of God's people.

'wisdom and understanding are given to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and glory such as none of the kings before you had, nor shall any after you have the like.'

Gift of wisdom with superadded splendorτὴν
The answer establishes a hierarchy: wisdom comes first, while wealth and glory are added gifts. Solomon receives abundance, but as something consequent upon rightly ordered desire.
