Theme

Solomon orders workers, materials, and worship for a temple that honors the God heaven cannot contain.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 2 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is an epistolary and administrative prelude to the temple building itself. It opens with the scale of Solomon's workforce (vv. 1, 16-17), framing the project as a national undertaking dependent upon carefully ranked labor. But the heart of the chapter lies in Solomon's message to Hiram of Tyre (vv. 2-9), where the temple is described not as a house that could contain God, but as a sanctified place for perpetual worship before the one who is greater than all gods. The speech combines theological restraint with liturgical specificity: incense, showbread, daily burnt offerings, Sabbaths, new moons, and feasts all define the house's purpose. Hiram's written response (vv. 10-15) both praises Israel's God and supplies the international partnership needed for construction, especially through a master artisan capable of working in every major luxury medium. The chapter therefore presents the temple as at once transcendent in reference, practical in preparation, and international in procurement, while still remaining wholly ordered to Israel's covenant worship.

And Solomon gathered seventy thousand men and eighty thousand stonecutters in the mountain region, with three thousand six hundred overseers over them.

Opening labor census for the building campaignκαὶ
The chapter begins with numbers, not ornament. Before a single theological speech is heard, the project is shown to require organized labor on a scale worthy of a royal-temple undertaking.

And Solomon sent to Hiram king of Tyre, saying, 'As you dealt with David my father and sent him cedars to build for himself a house to dwell in,'

Diplomatic appeal grounded in Davidic precedentκαὶ
Solomon's embassy begins by invoking the established relationship between Tyre and David. The project is presented as continuity rather than innovation in foreign policy.

'behold, I his son am building a house for the name of the Lord my God, to consecrate it to him, to burn incense before him, and for the continual showbread, and for offering whole burnt offerings continually morning and evening, on Sabbaths and at new moons and at the feasts of the Lord our God. This is forever upon Israel.'

Liturgical purpose statement for the templeκαὶ
The house is defined by worship, not residence in a crude spatial sense. The long sequence of cultic functions grounds the temple in Israel's regular and perpetual service.

καὶ ὁ οἶκος ὃν ἐγὼ οἰκοδομῶ μέγας ὅτι μέγας ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν παρὰ πάντας τοὺς θεούς

'And the house that I am building will be great, because our God is great above all gods.'

The greatness of the house derives from the greatness of Godκαὶ
Solomon's argument moves from architecture to theology. The building's greatness is fitting not because God can be contained, but because his uniqueness demands honor.

'And who will be able to build him a house? For heaven and the heaven of heaven do not bear his glory. And who am I to build him a house, except to burn incense before him?'

Confession of divine transcendenceκαὶ
This is the chapter's theological crux. Solomon both insists on the necessity of the temple and denies that it can circumscribe the God whose glory exceeds the heavens.
