The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 3ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ Γ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The temple rises in measured splendor as sacred space ordered toward the holy of holies.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 3 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter is the architectural core of the opening Solomonic building narrative. It begins by fixing the temple site theologically and historically: Jerusalem, Mount Moriah, the place of the Lord's appearance to David, and the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite are all folded into a single sacred coordinate (vv. 1-2). The rest of the chapter proceeds from measurement to ornament, from the great house to the holy of holies, and from the interior veil to the named front pillars (vv. 3-17). The Greek is especially itemized and technical here, preserving dimensions, materials, weights, and decorative programs in largely additive sequence. Yet the list-like style does not flatten the chapter. Its movement inward toward the holy of holies and then back outward to veil and pillars makes the temple legible as ordered space: measured, precious, and symbolically guarded by cherubim at every decisive threshold.

And Solomon began to build the house of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the Lord had appeared to David his father, in the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.

Theologically charged site noticeκαὶ
The opening locates the temple by revelation, by Davidic preparation, and by remembered topography. The sanctuary stands at a place already interpreted by divine appearance and penitential history.
