The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 4ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ Δ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The temple is furnished for sacrifice, cleansing, light, and bread so worship can fully begin.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 4 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. If chapter 3 established the temple's architectural body, chapter 4 inventories the furnishings and larger court apparatus that make sacrificial worship possible. The narrative proceeds from the bronze altar to the molten sea, subsidiary lavers, lampstands, tables, bowls, courts, and doors (vv. 1-10), then shifts to the completion report for Hiram's bronze works and Solomon's remaining vessels (vv. 11-22). The Greek diction is dense with technical terminology, measurements, and object lists, sometimes preserving unusual or transliterated item names without explanatory smoothing. That very density is significant. The chapter is less interested in aesthetic impression than in the completeness of the cultic environment: washing, lighting, offering, bread, access, and ornament are all supplied in abundance. The result is a temple furnished not merely for spectacle but for the full rhythm of priestly service.

καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ θυσιαστήριον χαλκοῦν πήχεων εἴκοσι μῆκος καὶ τὸ εὖρος πήχεων εἴκοσι ὕψος πήχεων δέκα

And he made a bronze altar, twenty cubits its length and twenty cubits its width, and ten cubits its height.

Opening with the great bronze altarκαὶ
The furnishing list begins with the primary site of sacrificial ascent. Its square breadth and elevated height make it the commanding object of the outer cultic space.
