The ark enters the temple, unified praise rises, and the glory cloud fills the house of the Lord.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 5 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter narrates the decisive transition from finished construction to inhabited sanctity. Once Solomon's work is complete and David's dedicated treasures are brought into the temple treasury (v. 1), the king assembles Israel so that the ark of the covenant may be brought up from Zion into the new house (vv. 2-10). The movement of the ark is narrated with deliberate solemnity: priests and Levites carry the sacred objects, immense sacrifices are offered before the ark, and the poles remain visible before the inner sanctuary as a memorial sign. The second half of the chapter (vv. 11-14) turns from processional action to liturgical unity. Priests, Levite singers, instruments, trumpets, and the repeated thanksgiving formula merge into one voice, and only then does the cloud of the Lord's glory fill the house so completely that priestly ministry must stop. The chapter therefore shows that temple completion is not complete in the fullest sense until the ark, praise, and divine glory converge.

And all the work that Solomon made for the house of the Lord was finished. And Solomon brought in the holy things of David his father, the silver and the gold and the vessels, and he put them into the treasury of the house of the Lord.

Completion notice joined to Davidic inheritanceκαὶ
The chapter begins by linking Solomonic completion with Davidic continuity. The new house receives not only new craft but also the consecrated wealth of the previous reign.

And the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, into the inner sanctuary of the house, into the holy of holies, beneath the wings of the cherubim.

The ark reaches its ordained resting placeκαὶ
The chapter's central movement culminates here. The ark is not simply stored but enthroned beneath the cherubic guardians at the heart of the temple.

There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses had put there at Horeb, by which the Lord made covenant with the sons of Israel when they came out from the land of Egypt.

Covenant tablets as the ark's defining contentοὐκ
The ark is interpreted through covenant memory, not relic accumulation. Horeb and the exodus stand at the center of what the temple now receives.

and it came to pass, as with one voice in the trumpeting and in the singing and in crying aloud with one voice, to give thanks and praise to the Lord, and when they lifted up the voice with trumpets and cymbals and instruments of song, and they kept saying, 'Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy is forever,' that the house was filled with a cloud of the glory of the Lord.

Unified praise answered by the glory cloudκαὶ
The chapter's liturgical apex is unity of voice in thanksgiving. The cloud comes not at random but as the divine response to covenantal praise spoken in common by the worshiping body.

And the priests were not able to stand to minister because of the cloud, because the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.

Divine presence overwhelms ordinary ministryκαὶ
The final verse shows the completion of the house by the suspension of normal action. When glory fills the temple, even priestly service yields before the immediacy of God's presence.
