The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 22ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ ΚΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Ahaziah falls with Ahab's house, and Athaliah nearly erases David's line before the hidden seed remains.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 22 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is brief but densely dynastic. Ahaziah reigns only a year, and the house of Ahab supplies both his habits and his counselors. His visit to the wounded Joram becomes the providential occasion of his downfall when Jehu executes judgment on Ahab's line. Athaliah then attempts to erase the royal seed of Judah, but Jehosheba hides Joash in the temple. The Greek presents the chapter as a sequence of compressed turns in which wicked counsel produces destruction, yet the Davidic promise survives in hidden form.

And the inhabitants of Jerusalem made Ahaziah his youngest son king in his place, because the raiding band that had come against them with the Arabs and the Alimazonians had killed all the elder sons; and Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned.

Ahaziah comes to the throne only because the older heirs have already been cut offκαὶ ἐβασίλευσαν
The succession is born from devastation rather than strength, which prepares the reader for the fragility of the reign itself.
