Theme

Joash repairs the temple but later betrays Jehoiada's house, turning reform into sacrilege and judgment.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 24 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Joash begins well under Jehoiada's guidance and repairs the temple through an orderly collection that the people support gladly. After Jehoiada's death, however, the chapter turns sharply. Courtly deference leads to apostasy, prophets are ignored, and Zechariah son of Jehoiada is murdered in the very precincts whose repair his father had sustained. The Syrian invasion and Joash's assassination are interpreted as judicial consequences of that betrayal. The Greek sustains the contrast between early architectural restoration and later covenant ruin: a king may mend the house materially and yet destroy its witness when he refuses prophetic rebuke.
