Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Theme

Judah's last kings rush toward exile until Jerusalem falls, yet Cyrus opens the book with a return decree.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 36 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter serves as the book's accelerated epilogue, compressing the end of the kingdom into a sequence of enthronements, depositions, tributary burdens, Babylonian assaults, and finally exile. Its theological center lies in vv. 14-21. Judah's fall is not explained merely by geopolitical weakness but by cumulative covenant betrayal: Zedekiah hardens himself, nobles and priests multiply abominations, and the people mock the LORD's messengers until there is 'no healing.' The destruction of temple, wall, palace, and treasures is therefore narrated as the outworking of prophetic word, especially Jeremiah's announced sabbatical desolation of the land. Yet Chronicles does not close with Nebuchadnezzar. By ending with Cyrus' decree, the book places devastation inside a larger pattern of divine speech: the LORD both judges and reopens the future. The final imperative, 'let him go up,' leaves the reader facing restoration rather than final ruin.

And the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.

The final sequence of kings begins with a popular enthronementκαὶ ἔλαβεν
The people act quickly to maintain the Davidic line, but the stability of their choice will be short-lived under foreign pressure.

Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah from Libnah. And he did what was evil before the Lord according to all that his fathers had done, and Pharaoh Neco bound him at Riblah in the land of Hamath so that he should not reign in Jerusalem.

A brief evil reign ends in Egyptian restraintυἱὸς εἴκοσι
The verse compresses character, judgment, and deposition. Jehoahaz's weakness is shown not only morally but politically as Egypt determines his fate.

Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Zechorah daughter of Neriah from Ramah. And he did what was evil before the Lord according to all that his fathers had done. In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the land, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years, then turned and rebelled against him. And the Lord sent against them bands of Chaldeans and bands of Syrians and bands of Moabites and bands of the sons of Ammon and of Samaria; they came against Judah according to the word of the Lord by the hand of his servants the prophets. But the wrath of the Lord was upon Judah to remove them from before his face because of the sins of Manasseh in all that he had done, and also because of the innocent blood that Jehoiakim shed and with which he filled Jerusalem; and the Lord was not willing to destroy them utterly.

Jehoiakim's evil reign is read through prophetic judgmentὢν εἴκοσι
The verse is densely interpretive: Babylon's rise, Jehoiakim's rebellion, the marauding bands, and the lingering guilt of Manasseh all converge in a theology of deserved removal.
