2 Chronicles 35ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ ΛΕ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Josiah keeps a great Passover, yet his reign ends in needless battle and national grief at Megiddo.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 35 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is the liturgical climax of Josiah's reign. Its first half is dense with priestly and Levitical detail: divisions, family groupings, sanctification, slaughter, blood manipulation, roasting, boiling, singing, and gatekeeping all converge in a carefully ordered Passover that Chronicles explicitly ranks above all since Samuel. The effect is not antiquarian fussiness but a picture of worship restored in its communal fullness. The second half is intentionally jarring. After such cultic faithfulness, Josiah dies because he will not heed Neco's warning, which the narrator startlingly identifies as words 'from the mouth of God.' Chronicles thereby guards against the assumption that previous obedience guarantees infallibility in every later decision. Josiah remains a paradigmatic reformer, but his death at Megiddo becomes a sobering reminder that kings too must keep listening.

καὶ ἐποίησεν Ιωσιας τὸ φασεχ τῷ κυρίῳ θεῷ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθυσαν τὸ φασεχ τῇ τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτῃ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ πρώτου

And Josiah kept the Passover to the Lord his God, and they slaughtered the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.

The chapter opens at the liturgical center of Josiah's reignκαὶ ἐποίησεν
The feast named here is not incidental. Chronicles presents the Passover as the mature expression of the reforming king's covenant obedience.

And he said to the Levites, those mighty in all Israel, that they should sanctify themselves to the Lord, and they put the holy ark in the house that Solomon son of David, king of Israel, had built. And the king said, 'It is no burden for you upon your shoulders any longer; now serve the Lord your God and his people Israel.'

Settled temple order replaces earlier modes of transportκαὶ εἶπεν
The ark belongs in Solomon's house, not in motion on shoulders. Josiah interprets liturgical stability as a summons to concentrated service.
