The Second Book of Esdras, Chapter 1ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Β′ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The opening chapter frames the return from exile as the explicit fulfillment of Jeremiah's word.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The opening chapter frames the return from exile as the explicit fulfillment of Jeremiah's word. Cyrus is not merely a tolerant monarch but the stirred instrument of the Lord, publicly authorizing the rebuilding of the Jerusalem temple and summoning both returnees and donors into the work (vv. 1-6). The chapter then turns from decree to sacred hardware: the temple vessels once removed by Nebuchadnezzar are inventoried and entrusted back to Judah's leadership (vv. 7-11). The theological emphasis is twofold. Restoration begins because the Lord acts on imperial power, and restoration is materially concrete, gathering people, gifts, and sancta for the renewed house of God.

καὶ ἐν τῷ πρώτῳ ἔτει Κύρου τοῦ βασιλέως Περσῶν τοῦ τελεσθῆναι λόγον κυρίου ἀπὸ στόματος Ιερεμιου ἐξήγειρεν κύριος τὸ πνεῦμα Κύρου βασιλέως Περσῶν καὶ παρήγγειλεν φωνὴν ἐν πάσῃ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ καί γε ἐν γραπτῷ λέγων

And in the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, so that the word of the Lord from the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of the Persians, and he made proclamation through all his kingdom, even in writing, saying:

Prophetic frameκαὶ
The opening verse grounds the whole return in the Lord's fulfillment of Jeremiah and presents Cyrus' proclamation as the first public act of restoration.
