The Second Book of Esdras, Chapter 2ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Β′ Β′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

What can look at first like a dry register is in fact a theological census of restoration.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 2 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. What can look at first like a dry register is in fact a theological census of restoration. The chapter identifies the returned Judean community by ancestral houses, priestly and Levitical lines, singers, gatekeepers, temple servants, and the descendants of Solomon's servants (vv. 1-58). It also records the limits of restoration: some cannot prove their lineage, and certain priestly claimants are suspended from holy privileges until legitimate cultic discernment can be made (vv. 59-63). The final totals, livestock figures, and freewill gifts place the restored community back into the land in a concrete, embodied way (vv. 64-70). The chapter's burden is corporate identity under covenant memory: return is not merely movement from Babylon but ordered reconstitution before the house of God.

And these are the sons of the province who came up from the captivity of the exile, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had carried away to Babylon; and they returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each man to his own city.

Register introductionκαὶ
The chapter opens the census by identifying the returned provincials as former exiles now resettling their ancestral cities in Judah.
