The first liturgical consolidation of the return is narrated here.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 3 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The first liturgical consolidation of the return is narrated here. Before the temple foundation itself is laid, Jeshua, Zerubbabel, and their associates rebuild the altar and resume the cycle of daily, festal, and voluntary offerings according to the Mosaic pattern (vv. 1-6). Materials are then procured for the sanctuary proper, and in the second year the Levites are appointed to supervise the work (vv. 7-9). When the foundation is finally laid, praise and grief sound together: younger voices celebrate the Lord's enduring mercy, while older witnesses weep because they remember the former house (vv. 10-13). The theological center is that worship resumes in the tension between fear, obedience, hope, and historical memory.
