Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 4 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Resistance hardens around the restored community here. Adversaries first attempt inclusion on compromised terms, offering to build alongside Judah while appealing to a mixed cultic past (vv. 1-2). Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the ancestral leaders refuse the partnership and insist that the temple is to be built by the returned community under Cyrus's command alone (v. 3). The opposition then shifts from proposed cooperation to harassment, political sabotage, and documentary accusation, eventually reaching the Persian court through a slanderous letter against Jerusalem (vv. 4-23). Artaxerxes answers by ordering the work stopped, and the chapter closes with the temple project stalled until the reign of Darius (v. 24). Theologically, 2 Esdras 4 shows that restoration must survive both syncretistic pressure from within reach and coercive opposition from imperial bureaucracy.
