The Second Book of Esdras, Chapter 23ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Β′ ΚΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Nehemiah's final reforms defend the restored community by cleansing sacred space, guarding Sabbath holiness, and purging covenant compromise.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 23 corresponds to the Septuagint form of Nehemiah 13 and is presented according to the standard critical-text tradition represented by Rahlfs-Hanhart, with the imported morphology serving as the base for this interlinear layer; the printed apparatus is not reproduced here. The chapter gathers Nehemiah's final reforms into four linked movements: the law is publicly read and the mixed population separated in response to the Ammonite and Moabite prohibition (vv. 1-3); Tobiah's intrusion into temple storage is discovered and expelled, and Levitical support is restored (vv. 4-14); Sabbath profanation in commerce and transport is confronted by gate-closure, warning, and Levitical enforcement (vv. 15-22); and marriages with Ashdodite, Ammonite, and Moabite women are rebuked as covenant-breaking pollution, with even priestly compromise purged (vv. 23-31). The chapter's rhetoric is sharp because its stakes are covenantal. Nehemiah is not merely tidying administration; he is defending the conditions under which a holy people, a holy day, and a holy sanctuary can continue to exist after exile. Particularly striking is the sequence of remembered prayer refrains (vv. 14, 22, 29, 31). After each reform, Nehemiah places the work before God for remembrance. That pattern keeps the chapter from becoming a simple portrait of authoritarian zeal. The reformer acts forcefully, but he repeatedly submits the meaning of his actions to divine memory and mercy. Temple space, economic justice, Sabbath sanctity, linguistic-cultural formation, priestly purity, and covenant identity all come under one overarching concern: restoration must not relapse into the very disorders from which God had rescued the people.

ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀνεγνώσθη ἐν βιβλίῳ Μωυσῆ ἐν ὠσὶν τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ εὑρέθη γεγραμμένον ἐν αὐτῷ ὅπως μὴ εἰσέλθωσιν Αμμανῖται καὶ Μωαβῖται ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ θεοῦ ἕως αἰῶνος

On that day the book of Moses was read in the hearing of the people, and it was found written in it that Ammonites and Moabites should not enter into the assembly of God forever,

Law reading and prohibitionἐν
The chapter begins with public Torah-reading, and the discovered command becomes the basis for immediate communal reform.
