Theme

Ezra's penitential response to the report of intermarriage fills the chapter. Verses 1-2 name the breach: Israel's leaders, priests, and Levites have mingled the holy seed with the peoples of the lands.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 9 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as preserved in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition, an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Ezra's penitential response to the report of intermarriage fills the chapter. Verses 1-2 name the breach: Israel's leaders, priests, and Levites have mingled the holy seed with the peoples of the lands. Verses 3-5 then slow the action into embodied lament, as torn garments, plucked hair, silence, and the evening sacrifice frame Ezra's prayer. Verses 6-10 confess that Judah's present shame stands within a long history of accumulated guilt, even while God has granted a small reviving through the Persian kings and a foothold at the sanctuary. Verses 11-12 recall the prophetic prohibition against covenantal fusion with the land's peoples, and vv. 13-15 conclude that divine mercy has already exceeded Judah's deserts. The prayer therefore leaves no ground for self-defense: the remnant can only stand as a spared but guilty people before the righteous God.

The narrative begins with formal report rather than rumor, making the breach an acknowledged public matter.
