The Second Book of Esdras, Chapter 10ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Β′ Ι′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The administrative outworking of Ezra's prayer is narrated here. Verses 1-4 show communal grief turning into Shecaniah's proposal for covenant action: the sin can still be addressed if the people submit to the law.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 10 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as preserved in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition, an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The administrative outworking of Ezra's prayer is narrated here. Verses 1-4 show communal grief turning into Shecaniah's proposal for covenant action: the sin can still be addressed if the people submit to the law. Verses 5-8 bind that proposal with oath and proclamation, moving from lament to enforceable assembly. Verses 9-11 stage Ezra's public confrontation in cold rain and trembling fear, while vv. 12-17 create a realistic investigative process suited to a widespread offense. The long register in vv. 18-44 is therefore not inert data. It demonstrates that repentance must become named accountability, household by household, until the foreign marriages are relinquished. The chapter's theology is judicial and communal: mercy is not opposed to order, but works through oath, assembly, inquiry, sacrifice, and separation.

Private confession spills outward into communal lament that includes the whole social body.
