The Second Book of Esdras, Chapter 11ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Β′ ΙΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The Nehemiah memoir opens here. Verses 1-3 set the scene in Susa and present the report that Jerusalem's survivors live in distress while the city's walls and gates remain ruined.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 11 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as preserved in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition, an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The Nehemiah memoir opens here. Verses 1-3 set the scene in Susa and present the report that Jerusalem's survivors live in distress while the city's walls and gates remain ruined. Verses 4-7 answer that news with mourning, fasting, and confession; Nehemiah's first action is prayer, not planning. Verses 8-10 then anchor that prayer in covenant memory, recalling both the threat of dispersion and the promise of regathering to the chosen place. Verse 11 narrows the prayer into a concrete petition for success before the Persian king, closing with the revealing note that Nehemiah served as cupbearer. The chapter therefore binds lament, confession, covenant theology, and political vocation together at the point where rebuilding begins.
