The Second Book of Esdras, Chapter 12ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Β′ ΙΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Nehemiah's prayer begins to receive political form here. Verses 1-6 describe Artaxerxes noticing the cupbearer's grief, eliciting the request for leave, and granting a timed mission.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 12 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as preserved in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition, an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Nehemiah's prayer begins to receive political form here. Verses 1-6 describe Artaxerxes noticing the cupbearer's grief, eliciting the request for leave, and granting a timed mission. Verses 7-10 add the practical instruments of restoration - letters of passage, timber authorization, military escort - together with the first hostile reaction from Sanballat and Tobiah. Verses 11-16 then turn inward: Nehemiah arrives, waits, and secretly inspects Jerusalem's ruins by night before speaking publicly. Verses 17-18 transform that hidden reconnaissance into communal summons, and vv. 19-20 answer mockery with a theology of divine patronage and covenant belonging. The chapter therefore joins prayer, prudence, royal authorization, local inspection, and public mobilization into a single restoration movement.
