The Second Book of Esdras, Chapter 13ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Β′ ΙΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Esdras 13 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as preserved in the Rahlfs-Hanhart tradition, an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter joins two kinds of material that belong together theologically. Verses 1-32 are a repair register circling Jerusalem's wall sector by sector, naming priests, Levites, district rulers, craftsmen, traders, and even Shallum's daughters. The list is not bureaucratic filler: it shows restoration distributed across the whole covenant body and anchored in concrete places, houses, gates, towers, and vulnerable approaches. Verses 33-37 then pivot to the first overt mockery from Sanballat and Tobiah. The effect is deliberate. As soon as the community's labor becomes visible, ridicule rises against it; the answer is not counter-mockery but appeal to God. The chapter therefore frames rebuilding as consecrated common work performed under the pressure of contempt.

And Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate; they consecrated it and set up its doors, and they consecrated it as far as the Tower of the Hundred, as far as the Tower of Hananel.

The repair work begins with priestly consecration at the Sheep Gateκαὶ ἀνέστη
The wall register opens liturgically. Before the city is merely secured, its first gate is treated as holy work under priestly oversight.
