Theme

Antiochus Eupator's invasion is answered by prayer, bold resistance, and the fitting downfall of Menelaus.

Translation & textual notes

Antiochus V Eupator's campaign against Judea, the downfall of Menelaus, Judas' summons to communal prayer, the daring night assault on the Seleucid camp, and the negotiations that end with a temporary settlement are narrated here in compressed fashion. The chapter keeps military action and theological interpretation closely joined, presenting Judas' strategy as dependent on the Creator's protection and reading the enemy's reversals through the lens of divine justice.
