Theme

Demetrius and Alcimus turn on Judas through intrigue and sacrilege, while Razis dies as a witness to loyalty.

Translation & textual notes

2 Maccabees 14 narrates the political reversal that follows Demetrius's accession and the renewed attempt to break Judas through court intrigue, military pressure, and sacrilege. Alcimus, excluded from the sanctuary, accuses Judas before the king and secures the dispatch of Nicanor. Yet the chapter does not move in a straight line from accusation to attack: Nicanor first recognizes Judas's courage, negotiates peace, and even forms a personal attachment before royal suspicion and Alcimus's slander push him back toward coercion. The narrative then narrows from imperial politics to sacred crisis. Nicanor threatens the temple, the priests pray for its preservation, and the chapter closes with the noble self-sacrifice of Razis, whose death is portrayed as an embodied witness to Jewish loyalty, civic devotion, and refusal to be handed over to defilement.

But after a period of three years it was reported to those around Judas that Demetrius, the son of Seleucus, had sailed into the harbor at Tripolis with a strong force and a fleet.

Demetrius reenters the sceneμετὰ
The chapter opens by shifting from local Judean conflict back to imperial succession. Demetrius's landing signals that the struggle around Judas will once again be entangled with larger Seleucid power politics.
