Theme

Simon's intercession is answered by immediate divine judgment, but the humbled king returns to Egypt still bent on persecution.

Translation & textual notes

Simon the high priest's intercessory prayer is set against Philopator's attempted profanation and is answered by the divine judgment that drives the king back to Egypt unchanged in spirit. The chapter combines liturgical memory, biblical exempla of judgment and deliverance, and administrative persecution, culminating in a decree that seeks to reduce the Jews to branded subjection while exposing the moral divide between apostasy and steadfast piety.
