The Third Book of Maccabees, Chapter 3ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Γ′ Γ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Philopator's resentment hardens into a polished imperial program of anti-Jewish persecution.

Translation & textual notes

Philopator's resentment is transformed here into formal state persecution. It first contrasts anti-Jewish rumor with the Jews' actual civic loyalty and ethical reputation, then reproduces the king's deceptive rescript, whose rhetoric of benefaction, grievance, and public security culminates in a program of mass arrest, torture, confiscation, and extermination.

Taking these things to heart, the impious king was so enraged that he was not only angry with those in Alexandria but opposed even more harshly those in the countryside, and ordered that they be quickly gathered all together and deprived of life by the cruelest form of death.

narrative-developmentasyndeton
The king's private resentment becomes a generalized policy against the Jewish population throughout Egypt. The verse marks the shift from personal anger to administrative extermination.

While these measures were being arranged, a hostile rumor spread against the nation, as an opportunity was given to people well disposed toward harming them, on the pretext that their laws kept them from sharing the common order.

explanationasyndeton
Rumor weaponizes Jewish legal distinctiveness. The narrator shows how preexisting hostility seizes on royal policy as a chance to legitimize violence.

Now the Greeks in the city, though they had suffered no wrong, saw an unexpected disturbance concerning these people and the unimpeded gatherings that were taking place; they were unable to help, for the policy was tyrannical, but they urged calm, were distressed, and assumed that these matters would change.

narrative-developmentasyndeton
Urban Greeks are not presented monolithically as persecutors. Some recognize the injustice but are too constrained by tyranny to intervene effectively.
