The Third Book of Maccabees, Chapter 4ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Γ′ Δ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The edict spreads humiliation and panic across Egypt, but even the machinery of annihilation begins to fail.

Translation & textual notes

The crisis is intensified here by tracing the social effects of the king's edict across Egypt: gentile celebration, Jewish lament, the humiliating deportation of families to Schedia, the plan to register and annihilate the whole people, and the frustrated census that exposes the limits of royal power. The chapter lingers over bodily suffering and public shame, yet it closes by interpreting the administrative failure not as chance but as the invincible providence of the God who helps the Jews from heaven.

Everywhere that this decree arrived, a public festivity arose among the nations with shouting and joy, as though the hatred long harbored in their minds were now openly showing itself with boldness.

narrative-developmentπάντῃ δέ ὅπου
The decree immediately exposes latent anti-Jewish hostility. Public celebration among the nations reveals that the king's policy gives social permission to old resentments.
