The Third Book of Maccabees, Chapter 5ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Γ′ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The planned spectacle of slaughter collapses again and again as heaven frustrates the king's decree at the brink.

Translation & textual notes

The dramatic center of the book appears here: the king prepares drunken elephants to trample the Jews, the imprisoned community cries out for mercy, and God repeatedly frustrates the decree through sleep, forgetfulness, and public rebuke before the final approach to slaughter. The chapter alternates between court spectacle and collective prayer, exposing royal rage as unstable and idolatrous while presenting Jewish survival as the work of heavenly providence that can reverse death at the very brink of Hades.
